EXIN's History
EXIN was initially founded in 1984 as an independent exam institute to test candidates who had participated in local IT education programs. At that time, the EXIN Foundation was under the supervision of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. IT education was solely in the hands of colleges and universities for which EXIN provided the independent testing. Between then and the mid-1990s, the market saw an emergence of many best practice standards such as ITIL, PRINCE2, BiSL, ASL, TMap®. By the end of the ‘90s, the market was flooded with standards and it became obvious that organizations needed help in navigating these options. EXIN decided in cooperation with other IT organizations to formalize what IT functions were necessary for companies and the competencies that were required of IT employees. From this came the concept of frameworks: a set of IT competencies based on international standards. Since then, EXIN has continued in this role, gradually becoming a leader in the worldwide proliferation of IT Service Management certifications.
